The coast has always exerted a strong attraction on artists. Consequently, quite a number of avant-garde artists originated from the Flemish Coast or stayed there at a certain point in time. The exhibition at the PMMK, the Museum of Modern Art by the Sea in Ostend -the city of Ensor- wants to highlight this aspect in particular.
The central figure of the exhibition is James Ensor, who made a significant contribution to the avant-garde of art in Belgium and abroad. An exquisite selection of masterpieces of this unique Belgian artist will be complemented with works of artists who played a decisive role in the evolution of the history of art, from Realism to Surrealism over symbolism and expressionism: among others Léon Spilliaert, Constant Permeke, Paul Delvaux, René Magritte, Auguste Daumier, Edvard Munch, Vincent Van Gogh, Giorgio De Chirico, Salvador Dali, Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky and Max Ernst.
