Since time immemorial, games of chance have been an object of fascination. In Antiquity, dice games were a source of pleasure, followed later by card games, roulette and lotteries. For its 75th anniversary, Belgium’s National Lottery searched through its archives and came up with a veritable treasure trove of documents and one-of-a-kind objects. The finds include thousands of advertising posters, including the inaugural one from 1934, lottery tickets, the first scratch cards, an amazing collection of automats, among many others/many other finds. The book also goes in search of Europe’s earliest lotteries. Material from the archives is supplemented by an impressive collection of works of art connected with games of chance, including the masterwork by David Teniers the Younger, which depicts card players in an inn.

This publication accompanies the exhibition of the same name at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, Brussels (16 October 2009 – 31 January 2010).
