Hans/Jean Arp (1886–1966) and Sophie Taeuber-Arp (1889–1943) are two major artists of the 20th-century avant-garde. Among the most famous artist couples, they met in Zurich in 1915 and never left each other’s side. As pioneers of abstract art, they created a unique body of work; both were highly gifted and explored many genres. They developed not only an emotional but also an artistic intimacy, as they closely followed the creation of their partner’s work and discussed their aspirations intensively. From drawing to architecture, from textiles to wall paintings, each form gave rhythm to their lives, opening up geometric and organic abstraction to dance, décor, architecture, sculpture and the applied arts.
