The Renaissance painter Jacopo Bassano (c.1515–1592) was an artist of remarkable originality. As the head of a large family of artists, he ran a highly successful workshop in the town of Bassano, near Venice. In collaboration with his sons Francesco, Leandro, Gerolamo, and Giambattista, the workshop expanded and flourished well into the 17th century.

Jacopo Bassano, although widely appreciated in his own lifetime, has later been overshadowed by the immense renown of the Venetian masters Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese. Located outside the artistic centre of Venice, Jacopo Bassano and his sons produced masterpieces of outstanding quality, which became well represented in major European collections. They achieved widespread popularity in a variety of genres, including biblical-pastoral paintings, portraits, and altarpieces. This book presents a fresh insight into the innovative, artistic practices of Jacopo Bassano and his workshop.
